Much like we practice playing a musical instrument, or practice a sport, we must continually practice and challenge our sense of balance. This becomes increasingly important as we age, and the risk of taking a bad fall comes with greater consequences.
And, what better time to practice your balance skills, than before you have any balance problems! So, as long as you are not at-risk, here are some ideas on how you can practice your balance skills….
1. When you brush your teeth, stand on one foot.
2. Close your eyes while brushing your teeth. Progress to standing on one foot.
3. In the gym, try some of your regular exercises, such as squats, while standing on an unstable surface such as a foam pad or a BOSU.
4. Try a new sport that challenges your balance….in-line skate, skateboard, surf, stand up paddleboard, cycle, slack-line, ski
Don’t wait until you become at-risk. It’s like the old adage, “Use it or lose it.” Challenge yourself, and have fun!
